Taiten

臺展

The art exhibition held ten times in Taiwan under Japanese rule, from 1927 to 1936, with sections for Eastern-style and Western-style painting.

01About

Its organizer, the Taiwan Education Society, was nominally a private body, but its leading members were senior officials of the colonial government, so the exhibition was in effect an official one. In the first year only three Taiwanese painters were selected for the Eastern-style section, Chen Jin, Lin Yu-shan, and Kuo Hsueh-hu, known as the “three youths of the Taiten”; Li Shih-chiao was also selected that year, with Taipei Bridge. After a break in 1937, the Government-General itself held the exhibition six times from 1938 to 1943, known as the Futen. In 1934 eight Western-style painters, among them Li Mei-shu, Li Shih-chiao, Yang San-lang, Chen Cheng-po, and Liao Chi-chun, formed the Taiyang Art Society, which showed in spring alongside the autumn Taiten.
