Art fair

藝術博覽會

A short market where many galleries each pay for a booth in one hall to show and sell works.

01About

Art coming onto the market for the first time is sold on the primary market, where galleries take on artists and set prices for their work; works that have been sold at least once before belong to the secondary market. Art Basel, started in 1970 by gallerists in Basel, had 90 galleries from ten countries in its first edition. ART TAIPEI is organised by the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, founded in 1992, and 2026 is its 33rd edition; a review committee assesses galleries' applications and requests for large booths. Prices are rarely posted beside the works, so if you want to know, ask the people at the booth; a red dot beside a work means it has been sold. Not every fair is made of galleries: at the New Art Taipei fair (居然・藝境) in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, the artists themselves take part, with no gallery in between.

03Notes

How does the same kind of work look different on a gallery's booth wall than in a museum?
