Collage

拼貼

A technique of arranging pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other scraps and sticking them onto a surface, and also the name for the work made that way.

01About

Collage is both a technique and the work made with it: pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other scraps are arranged and stuck onto a supporting surface. The word comes from the French papiers collés (“pasted papers”) and was first used for an artists' technique in the early twentieth century. A collage can also include painting and drawing, or three-dimensional elements. Papier collé is one form of collage, closer to drawing than to painting: Georges Braque and Picasso both made papiers collés in late 1912 and early 1913, and Picasso pasted in pages of the newspaper Le Journal, wanting to bring the reality of everyday life into the picture.

Look closely at the edge of each piece: where is it a ragged torn edge, where a cut straight line, and how does one color sit against the next?

03Notes

Collage is read through the edge of each piece and how the colors sit side by side.

Can you tell which edges were torn and which were cut straight?
