Chinese original:

攝影上桌 對話生成式:流動的影像事件

Four young artists turn photography into three-dimensional installations set out on round tables in the style of a bando (a traditional Taiwanese catered banquet), where visitors can take a seat beside the works. The pieces deal with daily life, ties to the land, identity, and community memory. In the 1F multipurpose space of NCPI's Taipei building; free admission.

01About

In 1826 or 1827 Nicéphore Niépce first fixed an image captured with a camera, after an exposure of at least eight hours. His associate Louis Daguerre developed the daguerreotype, the first photographic process to be publicly announced and commercially viable; its details were made public in Paris in August 1839. Later materials cut exposures from minutes to seconds, and then to a fraction of a second. Labels may name how a print was made: the gelatin silver print is the most common process in black-and-white photography, and a chromogenic print, or C-print, is a colour print made from a colour negative, a transparency, or a digital image. A photograph is not always taken at the moment the shutter meets the scene. For Landscape Sublime (2013–), Anastasia Samoylova printed stock landscape images from the internet, built them into collages in her studio, and photographed them again; for Image Cities (2021–2022) she used telephoto lenses, reflections, and spatial compression to layer advertising, buildings, and passers-by into dense compositions.

Choose one photograph, take in the whole frame, then step closer and look at its edges: what did the photographer keep inside the frame, and what was left out?

01About

An installation is not a set of separate artworks but one whole experience, centred on how the viewer perceives it. The artist Ilya Kabakov said that the main actor in the total installation, the centre toward which everything is addressed, is the viewer. Forerunners include Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau and the “environments” Allan Kaprow made from about 1957; from the 1960s installation became a major strand of modern art. In Taipei, Chen Chao-hua uses altered compressors and condensing techniques so that frost forms and melts again and again in the gallery, and in When Tomorrow is Forgotten at MOCA Taipei, one artist, drawing on their own care work, brings the spaces, objects, and traces of labour from care settings into the exhibition. A label reading “dimensions variable” means the size of the work changes with the space it is shown in.
