Yuichi Hirako: POSTFOREST

Korean original:

유이치 히라코: POSTFOREST

Yuichi Hirako (b. 1982, based in Tokyo) builds hybrid forms from animals and plants to tell of human-like figures living alongside them. In his third solo show at Gallery Baton, new paintings and sculptures from 2026 appear, including suspended sculptures, a first in his work, that fill one section of the gallery from floor to ceiling.

Modern Sculpture현대 조각Sculpture's move from statues on pedestals commemorating people and events toward three-dimensional work concerned with material, weight, and the space around it.Read more

01About

Modern sculpture is generally said to begin with Rodin. After him, Brâncuși distilled his subjects to their essential shapes, Picasso combined different objects and materials into one sculpture, Duchamp's Fountain (1917) presented a ready-made object as the work, and welded steel sculpture followed in the 1960s. Sculpture's concern moved from likeness and whom it honours to material, weight, balance, and the work's relation to the space around it and to the viewer's body. The sculpture park in Seoul's Olympic Park holds works by foreign artists invited to the cultural festival of the 1988 Seoul Olympics; they stand among lawns and paths and have become part of the landscape.

01About

Installations are often made for a particular site, and visitors move within them, so where your body stands is part of the looking. The materials can be everyday objects, fabric, video, or sound, and a work may be taken down after the exhibition and never shown again. The term first appears in writing in 1969; earlier, in 1958, Allan Kaprow called the indoor spaces he transformed “Environments.” Do Ho Suh's Seoul Home (1999) is a life-size replica of his childhood home in Korea in polyester fabric and silk on thin metal rods; it folds up for transport, and each time it moves to a new city, that city's name is added to the title.
