Clearing after Rain on Mount Inwang

〈인왕제색도〉

Jeong Seon's 1751 painting of Mount Inwang as the sky clears after rain, the defining work of true-view landscape.

01About

It shows Seoul's Mount Inwang after a midsummer rain. The rock peaks, darkened by the rain, are painted in dense ink and fill the top of the picture; across the mountainside lies a band of unpainted space, the mist as it lifts; in the foreground are pines, trees, and houses. The upright black peaks set against the horizontal blank give the picture its stability. Painted entirely in ink on paper, it was in the collection of Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee and was donated by his family to the National Museum of Korea in 2021. It is a National Treasure of Korea.

02In the gallery

When you see a true-view landscape in the gallery, notice how the dense-ink mountain and the blank mist sit one above the other.
