Surrealism
초현실주의
A twentieth-century movement in literature and art that starts from dreams and the unconscious and explores thought beyond reason.
01About
Surrealism balances a rational view of life with the power of the unconscious and of dreams. The poet Guillaume Apollinaire coined the word in 1917, and André Breton gave it its definition in his 1924 Surrealist Manifesto: pure psychic automatism, meaning thought set down with no control from reason and no concern for aesthetics or morals. Many artists took this up through automatic drawing or writing, drawing ideas and images out of the unconscious; others pictured dream worlds or hidden psychological tensions. To them, surprise and the uncanny held something magical and oddly beautiful. The movement then spread through international networks and was reimagined in many places. Salvador Dalí is counted among its major figures.
