2026 Taipei Digital Art Festival “Grey Autonomous Entity”
Chinese original:
2026 臺北數位藝術節「灰色自動體」
The Digital Art Festival Taipei began in 2006. Its 21st edition, curated by the new media artists Wang Lien-cheng and Lin Yen-chu, is titled Gray Autonomous Entity and looks at the familiar yet strange presence that appears once artificial intelligence generates images, language and sound from vast amounts of data. The main venue is the Taipei Collectible Botanical Garden, where generative images, interactive installations and mechanical works by more than thirty Taiwanese and international artists and groups are placed among the greenhouse plants; partner shops around Yuanshan show further works under the name Art In Stores.

Generative Art生成藝術Art in which the artist designs rules or a program and lets an autonomous system decide all or part of what the work looks like.Read moreClose
01About
Generative art is work produced in whole or in part by an autonomous system: the artist writes rules, a program, or a mechanism and hands over details they would otherwise decide themselves. The idea predates computers: Kirnberger's Musical Dice Game of 1757 assembled phrases of music by rolling dice. From 1962, A. Michael Noll of Bell Labs in the United States made computer art from mathematical equations and programmed randomness; in February 1965 Georg Nees showed computer-generated images in Germany, and Frieder Nake exhibited the same year, often seen as the beginning of computer-generated art; the French artist Vera Molnár was another pioneer. In 2020 the Art Blocks platform joined generative art to the blockchain, and its artists must accept every output of their algorithm as a signed work.

03Notes
In generative art the artist writes the rules or the code and hands some of the decisions to the system.
This time, at Grey Autonomous Entity —
Watch a while. Which parts did the artist decide, and which were left to the algorithm?
