Sejong Museum Gallery Curated Invitational Exhibition [Between-Breath: Floating Time, Wandering Space] Hwang Seong-jun
Korean original:
세종뮤지엄갤러리 기획초대전 [사이-숨 : 떠있는 시간, 떠도는 공간] 황성준
Hwang Sung Joon explores the traces left on objects and what they say about existence, using frottage (rubbing a sheet laid over an object so its surface texture comes through). The show brings together about 90 sculptural and flat works. In the main hall stand silvery objects with indistinct forms, their surfaces faintly reflecting the visitors who pass. Shown in Gallery 2 of Sejong Museum Gallery.

Rubbing and frottage탁본과 프로타주A method of laying paper over a surface with relief and rubbing ink or pencil over it, so the surface's pattern is transferred to the paper.Read moreClose
01About
A rubbing is made by laying paper on a surface with relief and passing ink or pencil over it, so the bumps and hollows appear on the paper. In Korea, tak-bon (rubbing) has traditionally been used on stone steles carved with text or patterns. In wet rubbing, the paper is first pressed to the stone with water and then tapped with an ink-loaded pad; the carved characters and lines take no ink and stay white. Dry rubbing uses no water: a solid ink stick is rubbed over the paper. Frottage applies the same method to making art. In 1925 Max Ernst laid paper over an old wooden floor and rubbed it with a soft pencil; the grain suggested strange images to him, and he published the drawings in 1926 as Histoire Naturelle.
