Yuasa Eboshi and Postwar Avant-Garde Fables of Metamorphosis

Japanese original:

ユアサエボシと戦後アヴァンギャルドの変身寓話集

Yuasa Eboshi (born 1983) builds paintings from images collected from old magazines, newspapers and the internet, and has invented a fictional "third-rate painter born in the Taisho era" with a chronology of his life. This show presents new work and adds new events to that chronology, and sets it beside postwar avant-garde painters such as Ikeda Tatsuo, Takayama Ryosaku, Nakamura Hiroshi, Katsura Yuki and Tsuruoka Masao. Using metamorphosis as the thread, it looks at how wounded, deformed figures, chimeras and eerie masks carry memories of war and the contradictions of postwar society. The novelist Ogawa Satoshi contributes a poem by an invented poet.
