Hamarikyu Imperial Garden

Japanese original:

浜離宮恩賜庭園

A representative daimyo garden of the Edo period, with a tidal pond and two duck-hunting grounds; the pond draws in seawater and changes with the tides. In 1654 Matsudaira Tsunashige, the Kōfu Saishō and younger brother of the fourth shogun Ietsuna, was allowed to reclaim land from the sea and build a villa here, the Kōfu Hama-yashiki; when his son Tsunatoyo (Ienobu) became the sixth shogun it became a villa of the shogun's family and was renamed Hama-goten. After the Meiji Restoration it became an imperial detached palace, called Hama Rikyū; it was given to Tokyo on November 3, 1945 and opened to the public in April 1946. In November 1952 it was designated a national Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Historic Site, together with the surrounding water.
