Chima, Unfolded in Layers
Korean original:
치마, 겹 위에 펼쳐진
The eighth exhibition in Arumjigi's Clothing series turns to the chima, the Korean skirt. Its 21 pieces run from felt skirts of the Three Kingdoms period, an okchung skirt decorated with jewel-beetle wings and embroidered Joseon skirts to new interpretations by the designers LEJE, JADEN CHO and JiyongKim; the historical skirts were reconstructed from old texts and surviving pieces. Closed on Mondays.

01About
The basic hanbok is a jacket with trousers or a skirt, with a coat worn over them; the arrangement already appears in Goguryeo tomb murals and has changed little over a long time. What changes are the details: the length of the jacket, the width of the sleeves, the collar and the ties. Children's clothes often have sleeves pieced from brightly striped cloth, called saekdong, used since the Goryeo period. On a child's first birthday (dol), the child is dressed in a full set of ornate hanbok, with a first-birthday sash (doltti) around the chest and a pouch at the waist. As Western dress spread in modern times, hanbok became clothing for holidays and ceremonies, and many families kept first-birthday clothes, wedding garments, and ornaments through the generations.

Compare adults' and children's clothes: the colors of the sleeves, the collar and where the ties fall, and the patterns sewn on.

03Notes
The basic set of hanbok has hardly changed; what changes is the jacket's length, the sleeves, the collar, and the ties.
