(no)thing

For about twenty years, photographer Myoung Ho Lee has questioned the lines between photography and painting, representation and reproduction, presence and absence. This is his first solo show at Gallery Hyundai in eight years, since 2018, with some thirty recent works: photographs, images from which forms have been carefully cut away, and large canvas pieces. At its centre are a new series on the Pacific nation of Kiribati, threatened by rising seas, and the Heritage series (2024–2026), which photographs a pagoda tree on the site of Seonwonjeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace. The parentheses in the title (no)thing put "nothing" and "thing" in one word.

01About

A photograph taken on film is first developed into a negative, which is then exposed onto photographic paper in a darkroom, usually enlarged, to make a positive print; a digital camera turns the light into a file instead. The exposure time decides how time appears in a photograph: a fast shutter freezes motion, while in a long exposure still buildings stay sharp, car lights draw streaks, and passers-by who are there only briefly disappear. Long exposures are easiest in low light. Rut Blees Luxemburg, born in Germany and based in London, photographs the city at night with long exposures, using only the light from street lamps and office blocks. Prints made by inkjet with pigment inks, often labelled pigment print or giclée, resist fading better than those made with dye inks.

03Notes

Exposure decides the time inside a photograph: a fast shutter freezes motion, a slow one leaves trails.

Judging by what moves, did the photograph catch an instant, or a stretch of time?
