Georg Baselitz

Korean original:

게오르그 바젤리츠

The first exhibition in Korea since the death of Georg Baselitz (1938–2026), a retrospective of 46 paintings, sculptures and drawings. It moves from the images that recur in his early work of the 1960s to the 1980s, through late portraits of his lifelong companion Elke and the Remix series that reworks his earlier motifs, and ends with a room of his late Gold Paintings.

01About

Neo-expressionism was a major 1980s revival of painting in an expressionist manner. It developed in several countries at once, as a reaction against the minimalism and conceptual art that had dominated the 1970s. It went by different names: in Germany, Neue Wilden ("new Fauves"); in Italy, Transavanguardia; and in France, Figuration Libre, which formed in 1981. The German painter Georg Baselitz began painting his motifs upside down in 1969, in an effort to overcome the representational, content-driven character of his earlier work.

02In the gallery

Step back to see the figure, then come close to the brushwork and the thickness of the paint; if a figure is turned upside down, ask what that placement makes you look at.

03Notes

Neo-expressionism answered minimalism and conceptual art by painting again in an expressionist manner.

What did you see first: what is painted, or the brushwork and paint?
