Sumida Art Festival

Japanese original:

すみだ五彩の芸術祭

A festival of the arts run by Sumida City, with exhibitions, participatory works, performances and workshops across the ward for four months; the executive director is Shingo Jinno, a professor at Chiba University. The name comes from a saying of ink painting, that ink holds five colours: ink that looks only black carries slightly different hues, an image for a district whose appeal shows only once you step into it. Programmes generally rest on Mondays and Tuesdays; there are information centres at Kotomachi Lab in Narihira and at the Chiba University Sumida Satellite Campus in Bunka.

About this festival

In Sumida's back streets, small workshops, old wooden houses, temples and shopping streets sit side by side, and many of this festival's works are shown in places like these.

The Sumida Art Festival is run by Sumida City, and 2026 is its first edition, from 4 September to 20 December, generally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (open on public holidays). Shingo Jinno, a professor at Chiba University, is the executive director, planning it with four other directors, and more than thirty artists and groups take part; the programme runs from visual art to theatre, dance, music, food and walks, and most of it is free. The information centres are Kotomachi Lab in Narihira and the Chiba University Sumida Satellite Campus in Bunka.

Many of the more than a hundred programmes are community events and workshops. We list only five long-running exhibitions worth a trip of their own: Meiro Koizumi, Sachiko Kazama, Kanji Yumisashi, Aiko Miyanaga and Yasuhiro Suzuki. The two in Tachibana are in neighbouring houses, and the two in Higashi-Mukojima are a few minutes' walk apart.

Below, grouped by the official areas, are these five exhibitions; for the other programmes and the area maps, see the official site.

01About

“Biennale” is Italian for “every other year”, and the Venice Biennale, first held in 1895, is the example most often cited; one that comes every three years is a triennial. The Yokohama Triennale began in 2001, and its ninth edition runs from 23 April to 12 September 2027, centred on the Yokohama Museum of Art. Its artistic directors are two curators, Cosmin Costinaş from Romania and Inti Guerrero from Colombia, who say that an international exhibition is “inherently local”. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Niigata Prefecture began in 2000 and also comes every three years; its works stand in villages and parks across six districts of Tokamachi and Tsunan, and empty houses and closed schools are put to use as well. The Sumida Gosai Art Festival in Tokyo (4 September to 20 December 2026) invites visitors to walk among the works, and some of them are participatory works that visitors join.
