Art Week Tokyo 2026

Japanese original:

アートウィーク東京 2026

Art Week Tokyo, started in 2021, is an annual event that presents Tokyo's contemporary art in Japan and abroad, and it has no main venue: this year 56 museums and galleries hold their own exhibitions, joined by AWT FOCUS, in which ten curators each organize a show at one of ten galleries, a video program and talks. From November 6 to 8 free shuttle buses link the venues, and AWT BAR in Minami-Aoyama serves as the event's information hub.

About this festival

Visiting galleries in Tokyo often means seeing one, opening a map, and taking the subway to the next. From Ginza to Roppongi, from Kiyosumi-Shirakawa to Gaienmae, the galleries are spread across the city, several stations apart.

Art Week Tokyo had a preview edition in 2021 and began in full in 2022. It is organised by the Contemporary Art Platform, an incorporated association, in partnership with Art Basel, and this year is its fifth full edition. From November 4 to 8, 55 places take part: 13 museums and institutions, 32 galleries and 10 AWT FOCUS venues. AWT FOCUS began in 2023 as "exhibitions you can buy"; this year it works with the Vienna gallery festival curated by, and curators from Japan and abroad each put on one exhibition at one of ten galleries. The director, Atsuko Ninagawa, describes it as neither an art festival nor an art fair, but an event that keeps experimenting with forms of exhibition and public engagement.

From November 6 to 8 the free AWT BUS runs six circular routes, A to F, plus a direct service between AWT BAR in Minami-Aoyama and AWT VIDEO in Otemachi; you can get on and off at any stop. Bus stops and the AWT desks at participating museums hand out a free participant wristband, and showing it at a participating museum's ticket counter brings a discount on some exhibitions.

Below, route by route, are the exhibitions at the participating museums during these days. The galleries each route passes are listed on the official bus page.

Knowledge cards

CuratingキュレーションCurating is the work of arranging works or objects for display and interpreting them for visitors.Read more

01About

A curator is not only a person who writes labels. Tate describes curators as people who may acquire, care for and develop collections, arrange displays of collection and loaned works, and interpret them for the public. It also notes that independent curators can make exhibitions in many kinds of spaces, inside or outside established institutions and online. So when you visit, notice which works sit next to each other, how far apart they are, and what text accompanies them.

02In the gallery

Walk the exhibition twice: first follow its order, then test one different route and see what relationships appear.

03Notes

Read the exhibition's argument in the gaps and pairings between works.
